Rehabilitation: Wetlands, catchments and livelihoods

Prior to the rehabilitation interventions, the integrity of both the Craigieburn and Thulandziteka wetlands – or the health of these wetlands - was declining due to the combination of within-wetland and micro-catchment factors. Since then a number of interventions have been undertaken which collectively contribute to the wetland rehabilitation focus.
There are three key approaches to an improvement in the health of Craigieburn wetlands: firstly, the physical rehabilitation of the headcut erosion within the stream channel, which will reinstate the water table (see Understanding the hydrological functioning of wetlands (CB)); secondly, improved within-wetland practices (see Farmer Support Programme); and thirdly, improved micro-catchment activities (see Upland rehabilitation).
